Non-exhaust particle emissions from road traffic consist of airborne particulate matter (PM) generated by the wearing down of brakes, clutches, tyres and road surfaces, as well as by the suspension of road dust.
The vast majority of public policies addressing PM emissions from road traffic target exhaust emissions. However, there is evidence of a need for immediate policy action to reduce non-exhaust emissions and mitigate their consequences for public health.
This guidance document presents the current knowledge on both technological and non-technological measures to reduce non-exhaust emissions, based on literature review and results from the NEXT project.
